Service = Learning
The goal of this project was to create a service learning opportunity that the school, students, parents and community members could participate in to enhance the quality of life in the Deer Valley Community. The project familiarized the parents and students with Mendy's Place, the pediatric unit of John C Lincoln Hospital. The group then planned a "Teddy Bear Clinic" which included a tour of Mendy's Place, games for kids, information for parents, and drawings for prizes.
Community Counts in Partnership with Wilson Primary and Fillmore Gardens
Students from Desert Vista High School partnered with Wilson Primary and Fillmore Gardens to provide mentors to the elementary school students. Activities included playing educational games, reading, and a school uniform drive for the elementary school students. The Wilson students also became pen pals with the Desert Vista students.
Focus on Results
The goal was to provide youth activities within a safe environment. The project included setting up a "Coffee House" which allowed students to participate in impromptu musical, vocal, poetry and theater talent shows for participants and spectators to enjoy. The project also held battle of the bands event, which consisted of nights of music from aspiring musicians.
