School Safety: Crossing Guard Training Program in Phoenix

July 27, 2010

The city of Phoenix will host the summer’s first Crossing Guard Training Program for the Maricopa Association of Governments 9 a.m.to noon Thursday, July 29, at Sunnyslope High School, 35 W. Dunlap Ave.

The training program is designed to provide crossing guards in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, Avondale, Tempe and Peoria with information and tools to keep students safe during the upcoming school year.

A highlight of this year’s training will be live scenario demonstrations offering crossing guards the opportunity to experience real-life situations and challenges that may arise during the school day.

Sunnyslope High School is the latest location in Phoenix to benefit from the High Intensity Activated Crosswalk Pedestrian Beacon, also known as The “HAWK.” This high-tech system, developed in Arizona, provides an extra layer of protection for students and other pedestrians using crosswalks.

Maricopa Association of Governments will present two additional training classes, Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Mesa Convention Center, Building A, 263 N. Center Street, Mesa, and Thursday, Aug. 5, at Rio Vista Recreation Center, 8866-A W. Thunderbird Rd., Peoria.
